Kisoro District is located in southwestern Uganda, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo
Kisoro District is located in southwestern Uganda, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a hilly, high-altitude area known for its cool climate and beautiful scenery. The district is home to diverse ethnic groups, mainly the Bafumbira, Bakiga, Banyarwanda, and Batwa. Farming is the main economic activity, with Irish potatoes, beans, and bananas being the main crops. Kisoro is a key gateway for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Tourists also visit to hike the Virunga volcanoes — Muhabura, Sabyinyo, and Gahinga — and to see crater lakes like Mutanda and Chahafi. Cultural encounters with the indigenous Batwa add to its tourism appeal. However, the district still faces infrastructure challenges and limited access to services in remote areas.
