Take a scenic drive westward through Uganda’s beautiful landscapes to Kasese, the gateway to Rwenzori Mountains National Park. For local travelers: Start your journey from your location in Uganda, enjoying the picturesque countryside as you travel to Kasese. Upon arrival, check into your lodge and relax as you prepare for the adventure ahead.

Begin your hike at Nyakalengija, the starting point of the Rwenzori Mountains trekking trail. With the help of experienced guides, trek through tropical forests alive with birds and monkeys. Arrive at Nyabitaba Hut (2,650 meters) in the evening and settle in for the night, surrounded by the tranquility of the mountains.

Continue your trek, passing through bamboo forests and traversing streams. As you ascend, enjoy stunning views of valleys and ridges. Reach John Matte Hut (3,420 meters), where you’ll rest for the night in the refreshing mountain atmosphere.

Hike through the beautiful Bigo Bog, a unique landscape of alpine vegetation. Cross wooden boardwalks and enjoy captivating views of the peaks. Arrive at Bujuku Hut (3,962 meters), close to the stunning Lake Bujuku, and settle in for the night.

Ascend further into the alpine zone, with breathtaking views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks. This challenging trek leads you to Elena Hut (4,540 meters), a base for summiting the Margherita Peak. Prepare for an early morning summit attempt.

For adventurous climbers: Begin your ascent to Margherita Peak (5,109 meters), the highest point in Uganda. Enjoy the thrill of reaching the summit and take in the awe-inspiring views before descending to Kitandara Hut (4,023 meters) for the night. For non-summiters: Explore nearby trails or enjoy the serene beauty around Lake Kitandara before returning to the hut.

Begin your descent from Kitandara Hut, retracing your steps through the remarkable landscapes of the Rwenzori Mountains. Return to Nyakalengija, where you’ll celebrate the completion of your trek. For international visitors: Drive back to Entebbe or Kampala to prepare for your departure. For local travelers: Head back to your starting point within Uganda, reflecting on the incredible journey through the Mountains of the Moon.
