Buliisa District is located in Western Uganda, bordered by Lake Albert to the west and the Democratic Republic of Congo.It covers approximately 3,200 km² and is part of the Bunyoro sub-region.The district’s population is estimated at 171,300 as of 2023, with a significant proportion under 18 years of age.The Bagungu people are the indigenous inhabitants, with other communities such as the Alur, Luo, and Lugbara also residing in the area.The district’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, and increasingly, oil exploration.Buliisa is home to parts of Murchison Falls National Park, Bugungu Wildlife Reserve, and Budongo Forest Reserve, offering diverse wildlife and tourism opportunities.Despite the discovery of oil reserves, challenges such as high youth unemployment and limited infrastructure development persist.
